Building the Atid Shul Luach: What It Actually Takes to Make a Modern Modular Luach from Scratch

Every Shabbos, the Gabbai fields the same questions: which tefillah additions are we saying? What parsha is it? When is Rosh Chodesh? The information exists — it just rarely has a proper home. A luach is one of the most functional objects in a shul, and it's almost always an afterthought.

When we set out to design the Atid Modular Shul Luach & Parsha Board System, we wanted to make something that actually belonged on a shul wall — something dignified, clean, and built to last. What followed was months of iteration, a material science detour through two different filaments, an expanding scope that eventually ballooned to 71 tiles, and more than three consecutive days of nonstop printing.

Here's how it all came together.


The Problem with Existing Options

Before designing anything, we did what any responsible maker does: looked at what was already out there.

The options weren't inspiring. The few dedicated shul luach products I found were either expensive for what you were getting, chronically out of stock, or just visually uninteresting — the kind of thing that looks more like office supply store merchandise than something you'd proudly hang in a sanctuary. The gap was obvious: there was no modern, well-designed, modular luach system that a shul could actually feel proud to display.

That was the opening. So we started designing.


The Material Question: Why PETG Won Out Over Wood PLA

Our first instinct was wood PLA. It makes sense on paper: a luach is a traditional object, and wood-filled filament gives 3D prints a warm, organic look that plain plastic can't quite match. We ran some test prints and the aesthetic was genuinely beautiful.

But there was a problem: wood PLA warps.

For small decorative pieces, a little warping is often tolerable. For a precision modular system with sliding tiles, interlocking tracks, and a flat mounting surface, it's a dealbreaker. The wood PLA parts we tested came off the bed with subtle bowing that, when scaled up to the full board dimensions, meant the tile tracks wouldn't align properly. The system depends on tight tolerances — and wood PLA in a real-world shul environment simply couldn't guarantee them.

There was also the sunlight issue. Many shuls have large windows, and a luach hung on a wall in direct sunlight could easily reach temperatures that would cause wood PLA to deform over time. For something intended to live on a wall for years, that risk was unacceptable.

The solution was PETG — chosen specifically for its dimensional stability and impact resistance. PETG handles elevated temperatures far better than wood PLA, holds its shape reliably across large print areas, and doesn't carry the moisture-sensitivity issues that plague wood-filled filaments. For a product that needs to look sharp five years from now in a variety of shul environments, PETG was the clear choice.

A Nod to Tradition: The Etched Woodgrain Inlay

Switching to PETG didn't mean abandoning the warmth we were originally chasing. Instead, we took the aesthetic in a different direction: an etched woodgrain texture, built directly into the surface of the board as a recessed inlay filled with a contrasting color.

The result is a board that reads as warm and organic without relying on wood-filled filament to get there. The woodgrain isn't a sticker or a surface coating — it's part of the print itself, modeled into the design to create depth and visual interest. It's a subtle nod to the traditional wooden luach aesthetic, executed in a material that will actually hold up on a shul wall for the long haul.


Scope Creep, in the Best Way: From Tefillah Inserts to 71 Tiles

The original concept was straightforward: a board that could display the daily and seasonal tefillah additions — Ya'aleh V'Yavo, Al HaNissim, Mashiv HaRuach, Tal U'Matar, and the rest. A Gabbai could pull out the relevant tile, slide it in, and the whole shul would know at a glance what we're adding to davening today.

But the more we thought about it, the more obvious it became: if we're already building a modular display system for the Amud, why not extend it to cover the entire Jewish calendar? The parshiyot, the yomim tovim, Rosh Chodesh — all the information that currently lacks a proper home.

So the tefillah inserts became a subset of a larger system, and the full tile set grew to 71 tiles — covering every parsha in the Torah (including split parshiyot), every Rosh Chodesh, and all the tefillah variations across the Jewish year. The board expanded from 4 tracks to 6, giving the Gabbai the ability to display multiple pieces of information simultaneously — critical for weeks when additions overlap, like Chanukah falling on Rosh Chodesh.


The Storage Problem: Engineering a Custom Organizer Box

Once you have 71 dual-color interlocking tiles, you have a new problem: where do they live?

A shul environment isn't an ideal storage context. Tiles left loose in a drawer get shuffled and lost. Without an organized system, the Gabbai would spend more time hunting for the right tile than the whole system was worth.

So we designed a custom storage box from scratch — a branded, compartmentalized organizer engineered specifically to hold and sort all 71 tiles in a logical order. The box is divided into labeled sections: parshiyot in Torah order, Rosh Chodesh tiles by month, tefillah additions grouped by season. Every tile has a home. The Gabbai opens the box, finds what they need in seconds, and the system stays organized over years of weekly use.

The box carries the shul branding and is fabricated to the same standard as the board — not an afterthought, but an integrated part of the system.

The Engineering Challenge: Larger Than a Standard Print Bed

Here's a practical constraint that doesn't come up in most product design discussions: consumer 3D printers have a finite build volume. The Atid Shul Luach — particularly the full 6-track Gabbai Edition — is larger than what fits on a standard print bed in one piece.

The solution was to split the board into precisely engineered sections joined with custom joinery: interlocking geometry designed to create a seamless, rigid connection once assembled. This isn't just gluing two halves together. The joinery is load-bearing and alignment-critical — the tile tracks need to align perfectly across the seam, the woodgrain inlay needs to read as continuous, and the assembled board needs to hang dead flat on the wall.

Getting the split geometry right took careful CAD work. It's the kind of invisible engineering that you don't notice when it works, and can't miss when it doesn't.


The Print: 3+ Days of Nonstop Manufacturing

The full Atid Shul Luach system — board sections, all 71 tiles, storage box, custom hardware elements — takes over three consecutive days of printing to produce. That's not a typo.

Each tile is a dual-color print requiring a filament change at a precise layer height. The board sections have intricate surface geometry — the woodgrain inlay, the track channels, the joinery — that demands careful print settings to execute cleanly. Custom hardware pieces are printed to tolerances that allow tiles to slide smoothly without rattling or falling out.

Every system is manufactured to order, which is why the 2–3 week lead time on the product page isn't padding — it reflects genuine production time and the quality assurance review before anything ships.


The Parnas Edition: Custom Logos and Dedication Plaques

The first full Atid Shul Luach was built for Congregation Darchei Noam, made possible by a generous sponsor who wanted to dedicate it l'iluy nishmat.

That first commission shaped what became the Parnas Edition. For Darchei Noam, we 3D-modeled their custom shul logo and integrated it directly into the top of the board — not as a sticker or an applied element, but as a structural part of the print itself, rendered in up to 8 colors.
